1. Diploma of Associate Engineering (DAE)

The DAE in Mechanical Technology is the most popular and practical qualification in Pakistan. It is a three-year program designed for students who have completed their Matriculation (Science).

  • Curriculum: It balances theoretical knowledge with extensive “shop” time. Students rotate through various workshops:

    • Machine Shop: Operating lathes, milling machines, and grinders.

    • Welding Shop: Learning electric arc, gas, and TIG/MIG welding.

    • Foundry & Pattern Making: Understanding metal casting and mold design.

  • Governing Body: These diplomas are awarded by provincial boards such as the Punjab Board of Technical Education (PBTE).

  • Outcome: Graduates are designated as Associate Engineers and are eligible for supervisor-level roles in industries or BPS-11 to BPS-14 positions in government departments like WAPDA or Pakistan Railways.

2. Higher Education: B.Sc. Engineering Technology

For DAE holders or F.Sc. (Pre-Engineering) students, the next step is a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

  • Accreditation: These programs are regulated by the National Technology Council (NTC), which is under the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

  • Applied Focus: Unlike a traditional B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering), which is design-focused and math-heavy, the B.Sc. Technology degree is 70% practical. It is tailored for those who want to lead manufacturing lines, manage industrial maintenance, or oversee plant operations.

  • Admission Requirement: Generally requires at least 50% to 60% marks in DAE or F.Sc.
